Fixing Skins That Don't Show Up or Appear as Steve/Alex
Why Skins Fail to Load
On offline-mode servers, Minecraft has no way to look up your real skin, so everyone defaults to Steve or Alex. SkinsRestorer solves this by fetching skins from Mojang or a URL, but several
things can break that process.
First, confirm the plugin is actually running by checking that /skin commands respond at all. If they do nothing, the plugin may not be loaded.
Common Fixes
- Wrong URL format: Skin URLs must point directly to a PNG file, not a webpage. A link ending in
.pngis required. - Invalid username: If you set a skin by username and that account doesn't exist or has no skin, nothing will apply.
- Client cache: Your own client caches skins. Disconnect and reconnect to the server, or restart your game, to force a refresh.
- Proxy setup: On networks using BungeeCord or Velocity, skins must be handled by the proxy layer. If only the backend server has the plugin, skins may not sync across servers.
- Permissions: A missing permission node silently blocks the command for some ranks.
If other players see your skin but you don't, it's a local cache issue. If nobody sees it, the skin was never applied server-side. Test with /skin set using a known-good username to isolate whether the problem is your input or the plugin.
