How to Fix Simple Voice Chat Not Connecting or Showing a Plug Icon

Check the Connection Status First

The plug or warning icon means the client could not reach the voice server. Open the voice chat settings and look at the connection status — it tells you whether the handshake succeeded. If it failed, the problem is almost always network-related rather than a broken mod install, since the mod itself is loading if you can see its icon and menus.

Server-Side Checks

Confirm the voice chat port is open in the server firewall and in any hosting panel. If the host uses a shared IP, make sure the port is not already taken by another service. Check the server config for the port value and confirm clients are using the same one. Some hosts block non-standard ports by default, so the port may need to be explicitly allowed. Restart the server after any config change.

Client-Side Checks

If only one player cannot connect, the issue is likely on their end: a restrictive network, a VPN, or a firewall blocking the voice traffic. Ask them to try a different network to isolate it. Also verify their voice chat settings show the correct server address. If the mod does not appear at all in-game, it is not installed correctly on that client — but if the icon shows and only the connection fails, treat it as a networking problem, not a missing mod.
