Shifting Wares Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I stop my mending villager from changing trades?
You can't prevent rerolls entirely, but you can plan around them by keeping multiple mending villagers or accepting that you'll need to find a new one periodically. The daily reroll mechanic is the core balance feature of this mod, so it applies to all villagers by default.
Why did my villager's trade disappear after I broke the lectern?
With Workstation Protection enabled (the default), breaking and replacing a workstation no longer forces rerolls—trades are now tied to the villager's UUID instead. If a trade disappeared, it was likely depleted and rerolled by the depleteReroll trigger when the villager restocked.
What happens to my cartographer's map trades when they reroll?
By default, map trades never reroll because Minecraft permanently saves maps to your world. You can enable map rerolls in the config with shiftingWares.allowMapReroll, but only if the map trade has been used at least once.
Can I set up a trading hall with this mod?
Yes, but it's less exploitative than vanilla. You can still create a trading hall, but villagers will eventually offer different trades, so you'll need to maintain multiple villagers for each type of trade or accept rotating stock.
Why do I see empty trade slots on my villagers?
Empty trades appear when a villager can't generate a valid trade for that slot—this commonly happens with cartographers in worlds without certain structures. Empty trades preserve the villager's level and trade position without replacing working trades.
How often do villagers reroll their trades?
By default, villagers reroll all their trades once per day, the first time they restock at their workstation after that period. You can also trigger rerolls by fully depleting a trade if the depleteReroll feature is enabled.
Do I lose the demand bonus when a villager rerolls?
Yes, the demand bonus is deleted when trades are rerolled, so prices reset to normal. This is a side effect of how rerolled trades are generated and can't be avoided.
What if my villager dies—can I just get a new one?
Yes, trades expire over time, so replacing a dead villager is much less punishing than in vanilla. You won't lose as much economic value since you weren't as dependent on that specific villager's permanent trades.
Can I disable rerolls for specific villagers or professions?
The mod doesn't have a per-villager toggle, but you can disable reroll triggers globally in the config (shiftingWares.dailyReroll and shiftingWares.depleteReroll) if you want to turn off the mechanic entirely.
Does this mod work with other mods that add custom villagers?
Yes, if other mods implement the ITradeLayoutProvider interface, their custom trade pools will work with Shifting Wares. Custom items with permanent data can use IShiftingTradeFactory to stay persistent across rerolls.
