How to Use Shield Sound Cues to Improve Your PvP Awareness
Why sound matters in shield fights
Before the Shield Fixes Mod, attacking a shield-blocking player always played the player-hurts sound, so you could not tell by ear whether your hit was blocked or landed. The mod separates these cues: a blocked hit now plays a shield-specific sound, while a clean hit plays the normal hurt sound. This lets you read a fight through audio alone.
Build a reaction habit
Whenever you attack, listen for which sound plays. Shield sound means the target is guarding and your damage was absorbed. Hurt sound means you connected. Train yourself to immediately change tactics on the shield sound, for example by pulling out an axe to disable their shield or by strafing to attack from a different angle.
Combine with the disable sound
The mod also plays a sound when a shield is disabled, such as after an axe hit. When you hear that cue, you know the opponent's guard is down for a short time and you can press the attack aggressively. Chain these cues together: hit the shield, hear the shield sound, switch to an axe, hear the disable sound, then rush in. Practicing this sequence against a friend will make it automatic in real fights, giving you a clear audio-driven edge in shield-heavy PvP.
