Shield by Side is purely visual—it changes only how your shield appears on screen, not how it functions. All blocking mechanics work exactly as they do in vanilla Minecraft.

Blocking Behavior

1. Hold your shield in your off-hand

2. When you raise your shield to block, it will move into your line of sight to protect you

3. Blocking still reduces damage from melee attacks, projectiles, and explosions

4. You can still take knockback while blocking, and your shield will still durability damage normally

5. Lowering your shield returns it to the side-position for better visibility

Key Points

The resource pack doesn't alter shield durability, blocking angle, or damage reduction. It simply repositions the model when you're not actively blocking. This means you get improved visibility during exploration and normal gameplay, but the moment you need protection, your shield functions identically to vanilla. There's no performance penalty or mechanical disadvantage—only visual improvement.
