Shared Resources Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I set up the global directory for the first time?
Launch Minecraft with the mod installed, and you'll see a prompt asking you to select or create a global directory—this is where shared files will be stored. Choose a location outside your instance folders (like a dedicated folder on your drive), and the mod will handle the rest. After selection, restart Minecraft to begin using shared resources.
Can I use the same resource pack in multiple game versions?
Yes, if the resource pack is compatible with both versions. Place it in the global resource packs folder, and it will appear in the resource pack selection screen for all instances that use the shared directory. The mod merges global and local packs, so you can also keep version-specific packs in individual instance folders.
What happens if I have the same file in both global and local folders?
The mod attempts to merge them—for most files, you'll see both options available and can choose which to use. If merging isn't possible, local files typically take priority, but the exact behavior depends on the file type.
Do mod configs actually sync across instances, or just game settings?
Only well-coded mods that store configs in the standard Fabric config folder will sync. The mod shares the config directory itself, so mods following proper conventions will automatically share settings, but poorly-coded mods that store configs elsewhere won't be affected.
Can I share mods themselves between instances?
No, the mod does not share the mods folder—you still need separate mod files for each instance. It only shares resource packs, data packs, configs, and other game files listed in the supported directories.
Will sharing saves between versions cause corruption?
Sharing saves between different game versions is risky and may cause corruption or crashes. It's safer to keep saves in local instance folders only, even though the mod technically allows sharing them.
How do I stop using the global directory and go back to normal?
Disable or uninstall the mod, and Minecraft will revert to using the default local directories. Your global files will remain untouched, but instances will no longer access them.
Does this mod work with shader packs?
Yes, if you're using Iris for shader support. Shader packs placed in the global shaders folder will be available across all instances that have Iris installed.
Can I share world map data from Xaero's mods across instances?
Yes, Xaero's World Map data is on the supported list, so map data will sync across instances using the global directory. This is useful for keeping your explored map consistent across versions.
What should I do if an instance isn't seeing files from the global directory?
Make sure the instance is using the same global directory path and that the mod is installed in that instance. Restart the launcher and instance completely; sometimes the mod needs a fresh load to recognize newly-added global files.
