Build a Branching Story with Player Choices

Displaying Choice Menus

Scripted Realms shows on-screen choice prompts that let players pick their story path. These menus pause the game and display clickable options.

1. Write your choice point in the script at the moment you want to branch

2. Define each option with its text label and the scene/event it leads to

3. Test the choice menu by reaching that point in your story

4. Verify each path works correctly and leads to the right next scene

Structuring Multiple Paths

Each choice should lead to a distinct scene or dialogue sequence. You can:

  • Merge paths back together later (player choices affect dialogue but rejoin the main story)
  • Create entirely separate story branches that don't reconverge
  • Track which choices players made and reference them in later scenes

Best Practices

Keep choice text concise and clear—players should instantly understand what each option means. Avoid overwhelming players with too many options at once; 2–4 choices per prompt works well.

You can also hide choices behind conditions: only show an option if the player has completed a previous task or made a specific earlier choice. This creates dynamic, reactive storytelling.
