Understand Why Performance Improves with Half-Resolution Rendering

The Math Behind Retina Displays

Retina displays pack twice as many pixels horizontally and vertically compared to standard displays. This means rendering at full resolution requires your GPU to process four times as many pixels. retiNO cuts this workload in half by rendering at the resolution of a standard display, which your Retina screen then displays beautifully thanks to its pixel density.

Why You Don't Notice Quality Loss

Your eye can't distinguish individual pixels on a Retina display from normal viewing distance. The high pixel density masks the lower rendering resolution, so Minecraft looks nearly identical while running significantly faster.

Performance Impact

Reducing pixel count dramatically decreases:

  • GPU memory bandwidth usage
  • Fragment shader load
  • Overall rendering time per frame

This translates to higher frame rates, lower temperatures, and better battery life on laptops.

When This Matters Most

The performance gain becomes most noticeable in demanding scenarios: large worlds, high render distances, complex terrain, or when using resource packs and shaders. Casual players in small worlds may see minimal difference, but the mod never hurts performance.
