Find and Excavate Your First Open Pit Structure

Locating Open Pits

Open Pit structures spawn naturally in your world and contain layered Sediment blocks protecting prehistoric loot. They're typically found in suitable biomes—explore varied terrain and look for distinctive pit formations with exposed sediment layers.

Excavation Process

1. Approach the Open Pit and identify the Sediment block layers.

2. Mine through the layers using any pickaxe. Sediment breaks relatively quickly, so even a wooden pickaxe works.

3. Collect Encased Fossils as you dig deeper. These are the primary treasure—keep them safe.

4. Gather secondary loot like Shattered Diamonds, Fossilised Apples, and Fossilised Shells as you encounter them.

5. Continue excavating until you've cleared the pit or collected what you need.

Pro Tips

  • Bring a pickaxe and empty inventory space—pits contain substantial loot.
  • Encased Fossils are fragile; don't lose them in lava or water.
  • If you find Amber or Sap of Life, these are valuable for later progression.
  • Mark the pit's location if you plan to return for more resources.
