Random Mob Sizes Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I start using this mod?
The mod works automatically out of the box — cows, pigs, chickens, sheep, frogs, and bats will spawn at random sizes by default. To customize which mobs scale and how, open your config file using `/random_mob_sizes config show` (singleplayer) or navigate to your mod config folder, then reload with `/random_mob_sizes config reload`.
Can I make only certain mobs have random sizes?
Yes. Use `/mobscalings set ` to configure individual mobs, or edit the config file to specify which entities should scale. You can also use `/mobscalings remove ` to stop a specific mob from scaling and return it to default behavior.
What's the difference between uniform and gaussian scaling?
Uniform scaling picks any size randomly between your min and max values with equal probability. Gaussian clustering keeps most mobs near the default size but occasionally spawns extreme sizes — use this if you want variety without constant giant or tiny mobs.
How do I make large mobs tankier but not overpowered?
Use `scale_health: square` so health scales faster than size, and set `scale_damage: normal` or `scale_damage: inverse` to prevent huge mobs from dealing massive damage. Test your ranges carefully — a cow scaled to 2.0 with full damage scaling can become dangerous quickly.
Can I have different mob sizes on different difficulties?
Yes. Use the difficulty-based config type: set `"type": "difficulty"` and specify separate scaling values for `peaceful`, `easy`, `normal`, and `hard`. For example, you can make mobs larger on hard difficulty and smaller on peaceful.
Why are my large mobs moving so fast?
By default, speed doesn't scale with size. Add `scale_speed: inverse` to your config so larger mobs move slower, or use `scale_speed: inverse_square` for an even more dramatic slowdown on huge mobs.
How do I reset the mod to default settings?
Run `/random_mob_sizes config reset` to restore all default values. This will revert any custom scaling you've set up, so back up your config file first if you want to keep your changes.
Can I scale boss mobs or mobs with weird hitboxes?
Yes, use `scaling_overrides` in the config for mobs that need special behavior — this lets you apply custom scaling rules to specific entities without affecting the global defaults. Test carefully since bosses can become unbalanced if scaled incorrectly.
What size range should I use to avoid breaking gameplay?
Start with conservative ranges like 0.75–1.25 and test in survival mode before expanding. Very wide ranges like 0.2–5.0 can create unbalanced scenarios, especially when combined with scaled health and damage.
Does this mod work with other mob mods?
The mod scales any mob by entity type, so it should work with mobs from other mods — just use the correct entity ID (for example `modname:custom_mob`) in your config or commands. Performance depends on how many mobs are spawning; test with your full modpack to check for lag.
