Principal Shaders FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I enable Principal Shaders after installing it?
Open Options > Video Settings > Shaders, then locate and select Principal Shaders from the list. Click Apply and the shaders will activate immediately in your world.
Why do my clouds look flat or disappear sometimes?
Check your cloud render distance and density settings in the shader options menu. If clouds are set too low, they may not render far enough; increasing these values will make volumetric clouds more visible and prominent.
Can I use Principal Shaders with other mods?
Principal Shaders works with most mods, but may conflict with other shader packs or mods that heavily modify lighting and rendering. Disable conflicting shader packs and test one mod at a time if you experience issues.
How do I make rain look more dramatic?
Adjust the weather lighting intensity in the shader settings to darken the sky during storms, then increase shadow contrast to make rain effects more visible. You can also tweak water reflectivity to enhance how wet surfaces appear.
Is Principal Shaders causing lag or low FPS?
Reduce cloud density, lower shadow quality, or disable volumetric effects in the shader options. You can also lower your render distance or switch to a lower graphics preset if performance remains poor.
Why do shadows look wrong or flicker?
Shadow flickering often happens at high render distances; try reducing your render distance slightly or adjusting shadow map resolution in the shader settings. Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date.
Can I customize how bright or dark the sky gets during different times of day?
Yes, open the shader options menu and look for sky brightness or time-of-day lighting controls. You can adjust sunrise, sunset, and noon brightness independently to match your preferred look.
Does Principal Shaders work in the Nether or End?
Principal Shaders applies to all dimensions, but the Nether and End have different lighting rules that may make some effects less noticeable. The shader will still enhance shadows and lighting in these dimensions.
How do I turn off specific features like clouds or shadows?
Open the shader options menu and look for toggles or sliders for individual features like volumetric clouds, shadow rendering, or weather effects. Set them to zero or disable them to turn off unwanted effects.
Why do blocks look different colors when it rains?
Principal Shaders intentionally shifts lighting and color during rain to create a more realistic stormy atmosphere. This is a feature, but you can reduce the weather lighting intensity in the shader settings if you prefer less dramatic color changes.
