Portal Linking Compass Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I craft the Portal Linking Compass?
Refer to the Crafting Recipes section on this wiki for the exact recipe. Once crafted, you'll have a compass that works like a regular compass but can be linked to portals.
Do I need to link the compass to a portal in the Overworld first or can I start in the Nether?
You can start in either dimension—right-click the compass on a portal block in whichever dimension you're in first, then travel to the other dimension and the compass will point to the correct coordinates for your linked portal.
The compass is pointing in a direction but there's no portal there. What do I do?
The compass is pointing to the *coordinates* where you need to build a portal, not to an existing one. Build a nether portal at that location and it will link correctly to the portal you connected the compass to.
Can I use one compass to link multiple portal pairs?
Yes, but you'll need to relink the compass each time—right-clicking it on a new portal will disconnect it from the previous one and connect it to the new portal instead.
What if I right-click the compass on the wrong portal by accident?
Simply right-click the compass on the correct portal to relink it. There's no penalty for relinking—the compass will update to point to the new portal's linked coordinates.
Does the compass work with dimensions other than the Overworld and Nether?
This mod is designed specifically for linking Overworld-Nether portals, which have the 8:1 distance ratio. Compatibility with other dimensions depends on whether they use the same coordinate scaling system.
Why is the compass pointing to coordinates that seem really far away?
Remember that the Nether's coordinates are scaled 8:1 compared to the Overworld—a compass pointing 8000 blocks away in the Overworld might be pointing to a location only 1000 blocks away in the Nether, or vice versa.
Can I use this mod without looking at coordinates at all?
Yes, that's the whole point—just follow where the compass points and build your portal there. You never need to open the F3 screen or do any math.
What happens if I move the compass to my inventory before building the linked portal?
The compass stays linked to the portal you connected it to, so you can travel, store it, and come back later—the link persists until you relink the compass to a different portal.
Does this mod affect performance or cause lag?
The mod is lightweight and only adds a new compass item and linking mechanic—it shouldn't cause noticeable performance issues on most systems.
