Pig Pen Cipher Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I actually get the Pig Pen Cipher to show up in Minecraft?
The mod doesn't add its own items or commands; it registers a font that other mods load on demand, so you won't see anything until something requests it. In practice, Dark Utilities is what pulls the font in, so install that alongside this mod and the cipher becomes available wherever text is rendered.
Where can I use the cipher once it's loaded?
Anywhere the game renders text: books and written pages, signs, chat messages, item names, and tooltips. If a piece of text supports the cipher font, you can type the cipher characters and they'll display as pig pen symbols.
How do I type the pig pen symbols on my keyboard?
You don't type them directly — the cipher is a font, so you type the normal letters and the font swaps the glyphs for the corresponding pig pen shapes. That means A becomes the corner shape, E becomes the square, and so on, without any special keys.
What's the key for the cipher? I keep forgetting which shape is which letter.
The key is a tic-tac-toe style grid: the first nine letters (A–I) fill the nine cells of the grid, and the next nine (J–R) fill a second grid drawn with dots in each cell. The last letters (S–V) go in an X shape and W–Z go in an X with dots, so a dotted version of a shape means the letter from the second set.
Why does my cipher text show up as normal letters instead of symbols?
The font only applies where the game or another mod explicitly uses it, so plain chat or vanilla signs may still render normal letters. Make sure you're writing in a context that supports the cipher font, such as a book or a Dark Utilities feature that requests it.
Can other players read my cipher messages without the mod?
No — if they don't have the font loaded, the symbols either won't render or will fall back to normal text, so they can't decode it visually. That's what makes it useful for secret messages between friends who both have the mod set up.
Does the Pig Pen Cipher Mod work on a server?
It's a client-side font mod, so it needs to be present on each player's client for them to see the symbols. The server itself doesn't need it, but players without it will just see plain letters or missing glyphs.
Will this mod cause lag or performance problems?
No — it only adds a font and doesn't touch world generation, entities, or ticking logic, so it has essentially no performance impact. Any lag you see is coming from something else.
Can I use the cipher in books I give to other players?
Yes, written books and book pages are one of the main places the cipher font shows up, so you can write a whole encoded message and hand it over. The recipient needs the font loaded to see the symbols instead of plain text.
Does the cipher work with other mods' text, like tooltips or custom GUIs?
It can, as long as that mod renders text through the standard font system and requests the cipher font. Mods that hardcode their own rendering or use a different text pipeline won't show the symbols.
