Understand the Name Pool and How Names Are Assigned

How Names Are Selected

When a baby mob spawns naturally or through breeding, Pet Names Mod automatically pulls a random name from its pool of over 5,000 unique names. Each baby receives one name, and that name persists for the mob's lifetime.

Name Variety

The large pool ensures that repeated names are uncommon, even if you breed many mobs. Names are drawn from both male and female categories, though you can restrict this in config.

Visibility

Assigned names appear above the mob's head as a nametag. You can see them in survival mode without any special tools or commands.

Respawning and Naming

If a named pet dies and you breed new babies, they receive fresh random names from the pool—the mod doesn't reuse old names or track naming history.

Configuration Impact

Disabling a mob type in config prevents new babies of that type from receiving names, but already-named mobs keep their existing names.
