Identify Whether Lag Is Caused by Your Computer or the Server
Check Your Local Performance Metrics
Press P to open the stats screen and examine the data:
- FPS and frame time show how smoothly your game is rendering
- CPU usage and temperature reveal if your processor is overloaded
- RAM usage indicates memory pressure
- Entity and chunk counts tell you how much is happening around you
Check Your Connection
The stats screen displays your ping in multiplayer. High ping (typically above 100–150ms depending on your region) suggests server-side lag or network issues, not your computer.
Diagnose the Problem
Low FPS + high CPU/temperature → Your computer is struggling; try Performance Mode or lower graphics settings.
Low FPS + normal CPU/RAM → Your GPU may be the bottleneck; reduce render distance or particle effects.
High ping + normal local stats → The server or your internet connection is slow; nothing your computer can fix.
High entity/chunk count + low FPS → Too much is happening nearby; move away or use Performance Mode to reduce simulation distance.
