Getting Realistic Shadows in Different Lighting Conditions
Understand Day and Night Cycles
Only Shadows Shaders casts shadows based on sun and moon position. During midday, shadows fall directly beneath objects and are shorter. At sunrise and sunset, shadows stretch across the landscape, creating dramatic lighting. At night, moonlight casts softer, less defined shadows.
Position Yourself for Best Results
To see shadow effects clearly, stand in open areas during daytime. Forests and caves naturally show ambient occlusion depth. Underground, shadows from torches and other light sources won't be as pronounced—the shader focuses on celestial lighting.
Adjust Time of Day
Early morning and late afternoon provide the most visually striking shadows for building and exploration.
Account for Weather
Rain and storms reduce shadow definition slightly, as cloud cover diffuses sunlight. Clear days show the sharpest, most realistic shadows.
Combine with Terrain Features
Shadows interact most noticeably with varied terrain—hills, cliffs, and structures. Flat plains show less dramatic shadow variation than mountainous areas.
