Only Shadows Shaders FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
Why don't my shadows look right after installing?
Make sure you've enabled the shader in your video settings and that your graphics driver supports OpenGL properly. If shadows still look flat or missing, check that you're not using a conflicting resource pack that overrides lighting.
Can I use this with other shader packs?
No, shader packs replace each other—you can only run one at a time. If you want to use Only Shadows Shaders, you'll need to disable any other shader pack first.
How do I make shadows darker or lighter?
Open the shader settings from your video options menu and look for shadow intensity or shadow strength controls to adjust how dark the shadows appear. You can also fine-tune ambient occlusion separately to change how much darkening happens in block corners.
My fps dropped a lot after installing this
Shadow rendering is performance-intensive; try lowering shadow distance or shadow quality in the shader settings, or reduce your render distance. Disabling ambient occlusion can also help if performance is critical.
Do shadows move with the sun and moon?
Yes, shadows rotate and shift direction as the sun and moon move across the sky, creating realistic lighting changes throughout the day-night cycle.
Why are shadows blocky or pixelated?
This is often caused by shadow quality settings being too low; increase shadow resolution in the shader options. If it persists, your graphics card may need driver updates.
Does this work in the nether or end?
The mod works in all dimensions, but the Nether and End have different lighting conditions, so shadows may appear less dramatic or behave differently than in the Overworld.
Can I use this on a multiplayer server?
Yes, shaders are client-side only, so you can use Only Shadows Shaders on any server without the server needing to have it installed.
What's the difference between shadows and ambient occlusion in this mod?
Shadows are cast by the sun and moon and move across the world, while ambient occlusion darkens the corners and crevices of blocks to add depth. Both work together to improve lighting.
Why do caves and indoor areas look too dark?
Adjust the ambient occlusion strength or enable any brightness/gamma settings in the shader menu to brighten shadowed areas. You can also increase your monitor brightness if the mod's settings don't provide enough control.
