Balancing Milk Against Other Foods in a Modded Playthrough

Understanding the Default Balance

By default, milk restores more hunger than a cookie or bread and roughly comparable saturation to cooked meat. That makes it unusually strong for an item that also removes status effects. If you are running a survival world with other food mods, you may want to tune it so milk does not trivialize hunger management.

Adjusting for Your Modpack

  • If your pack has powerful foods already (pam's-style mods, large meal items), consider lowering hungerLevelIncrease and saturationLevelIncrease so milk stays a utility item with a small food bonus.
  • If your pack is harsh — low food yields, dangerous mobs, frequent debuffs — raising the values makes milk a lifeline. The maximum of 20 hunger and 20 saturation is very strong, so use it deliberately.
  • On servers, decide as a group. A single config change affects everyone, and players who rely on milk for cleansing may be surprised if the food values change mid-world.

Interaction With Other Mechanics

Milk still clears all potion effects, including beneficial ones. In packs where buffs are hard to get, that downside matters more than the food value. Weigh the hunger gain against losing your buffs before drinking. If you want milk purely as food, consider whether another item fills that role without the effect-clearing tradeoff.
