Nickname Detector Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I check if a single player is using a nickname?
Use the command /nicknamedetector and the mod will search Mojang's database to tell you whether that player's displayed name is their original username or a nickname.
Can I scan my entire server at once?
Yes, run /nicknamedetector with no arguments to generate a list of all players currently on your server with indicators showing who is using nicknames and who is using their real usernames.
What's the difference between a real username and a nickname?
A real username is the original Minecraft account name registered with Mojang, while a nickname is an alternate display name a player has chosen—the mod identifies which is which by cross-referencing Mojang's database.
Does the mod work if players are offline?
The mod checks against Mojang's database, so it can identify nicknames for any username that exists in the system, whether the player is currently online or not.
What happens if I use the command on a player who doesn't exist?
The mod will return a result indicating that the username was not found in Mojang's database, meaning it's either misspelled or not a valid Minecraft account.
Can I use this mod on a single-player world?
The mod is designed for multiplayer servers where you need to verify other players' identities; it won't have much use in single-player since you're the only player.
Does the mod require any special permissions to run commands?
The /nicknamedetector command typically requires operator (op) status or appropriate permission nodes on your server to execute.
How often does the mod update its data from Mojang?
The mod queries Mojang's database when you run the command, so it retrieves current information at that moment rather than using cached data.
Will this mod cause lag on my server?
Running the command on all players at once may cause a brief delay while the mod queries the database, but it shouldn't cause ongoing performance issues.
What if a player changes their nickname after I check them?
You'll need to run the command again to see updated information, as the mod checks the current state of Mojang's database each time you execute it.
