How do I start talking to the AI assistant?
Type /nexa in chat to send your first question or request. The assistant will respond in chat, and you can continue the conversation by sending more /nexa messages.
What's the difference between ask-before-act and autonomous mode?
Ask-before-act mode shows you what the assistant wants to do and waits for your approval via /nexa confirm or /nexa cancel before executing. Autonomous mode lets the assistant perform allowed actions automatically without asking first. Switch between them with /nex-config mode.
Can the AI actually do things on my server or just answer questions?
The AI can perform special server actions like checking your inventory, reading the weather, or checking the time if those tools are enabled. However, it cannot modify the world or run arbitrary commands—only pre-approved helper actions.
Why is the AI taking so long to respond?
Response time depends on which AI provider you're using and server load. If you're using the default shared service, switching to your own API key with /nex-byok commands will usually give faster responses since you're connecting directly to the provider.
How do I use my own OpenAI or Google Gemini key instead of the default?
Use /nex-byok provider to select your AI service, then /nex-byok apikey to enter your personal API key. Run /nex-byok test to verify the connection works before using it.
The assistant keeps hitting cooldown limits—how do I increase them?
Use /nex-config limits maxrequests to set how many requests you can make per prompt, and /nex-config limits cooldown to adjust the wait time between tool actions. Check current limits with /nex-config limits status.
Can I change the assistant's name and personality?
Yes—use /nex-config custom name to rename the assistant and /nex-config custom prompt to write custom personality instructions. Use /nex-config custom reset to restore defaults.
Does the AI remember previous conversations or does it start fresh each time?
The AI maintains conversation history within a session, but you can clear your personal chat history anytime with /nex-config clearchat. Each player has their own separate conversation thread.
Can server admins control what the AI is allowed to do?
Yes—admins can customize request limits, tool cooldowns, enable or disable join messages, and set a global personality prompt for all players. Individual players can also override settings for their own experience with /nex-config commands.
What happens if I use a local AI model like Ollama instead of a cloud service?
Use /nex-byok provider to select Ollama or LM Studio, then /nex-byok endpoint to point to your local server address. This keeps all data local and removes dependency on external services, though response speed depends on your hardware.
