Prevent Water from Converting Unwanted Lava
Understanding Water-Lava Interaction
Water placed in the Nether will convert any lava source block it touches into obsidian. This is useful for large lakes but problematic if you want to preserve lava for other purposes.
Isolation Techniques
1. Create barriers: Build walls of non-flammable blocks (stone, obsidian, etc.) between your water and lava sources
2. Elevate your water: Place water channels high above lava pools so it cannot flow down and contact them
3. Use flowing water carefully: Remember that water spreads horizontally up to eight blocks, so maintain adequate distance
Safe Placement Strategy
Before placing water, survey the area for nearby lava. If lava exists within eight blocks horizontally or below your placement point, either:
- Choose a different location
- Build protective barriers first
- Accept the obsidian conversion as a side effect
Tip: Test water placement with a single bucket first in uncertain situations. You can always remove water and try again if it flows where you don't want it.
