How to Rename a Name Tag Without an Anvil Using /nametag

The Command

Name Tag Tweaks adds a /nametag <name> command so you can set a name tag's value without needing an anvil, XP, or a lapis lazuli. This is handy when you're far from your base or don't want to spend levels.

Steps

1. Hold the name tag you want to rename in your main hand.

2. Open chat and type /nametag <your desired name>.

3. Press enter. The name tag in your hand is now renamed.

Underscores Become Spaces

By default, underscores you type in the command are converted to spaces. So /nametag My_Pet_Pig produces a tag that reads "My Pet Pig". If a server admin has disabled nameTagCommandReplaceUnderscoresWithSpaces, you'll need to type spaces directly (which may require quoting depending on your setup).

Requirements

  • The command must be enabled (enableNameTagCommand is true by default).
  • You need permission to run it — on a server this may be restricted to operators or a permission group.
  • You must be holding a name tag; the command targets the item in your hand.

When to Use It

Use the command for quick renames mid-adventure, for batch-renaming tags you've collected, or whenever an anvil isn't nearby.
