How to Get a Name Tag Back From a Named Mob

Why the Name Tag Drops

With Name Tag Tweaks installed, any entity that has a custom name will drop its name tag when it dies. This means you no longer lose the tag when you kill a named pet, villager, or mob — you can pick the tag right back up off the ground.

Steps to Recover the Tag

1. Find the named entity you want the tag from.

2. Kill it using whatever method you prefer (weapon, fall damage, lava, etc.).

3. Look at the spot where it died — the name tag will be lying there as a dropped item.

4. Walk over it or right-click to pick it up.

Keeping the Name Value

By default, the dropped tag keeps the custom name it had on the entity. So if you named a pig "Bacon", the tag you pick up will still say "Bacon". If a server admin has turned off droppedNameTagbyEntityKeepsNameValue, the tag will come back blank and you'll need to rename it again.

Practical Uses

  • Recover tags from named mobs you're culling.
  • Move a name from one entity to another without crafting a new tag.
  • Farm tags by naming and killing mobs repeatedly (though this is usually slower than crafting).
