How to Read Chat Messages You Missed While AFK

The Problem

On a busy server, chat can scroll past faster than you can read it. If you go AFK — making food, answering a message, or just stepping away — vanilla Minecraft throws away everything past its small buffer, so you come back to an empty or nearly empty chat.

Scrolling Back Through History

1. Return to the game and press your chat key to open the chat screen.

2. Use the mouse wheel, or the page-up and page-down keys, to scroll upward through older messages.

3. Keep scrolling — with More Chat History Mod installed, the buffer holds far more than vanilla, so messages from before your AFK break should still be there.

4. Read from the top down to reconstruct what happened while you were gone.

5. Press Escape to close chat when you're done.

Things to Know

  • History is per-session. If you disconnect or the game closes, the stored messages are cleared.
  • Messages sent before you joined the server or loaded the world won't appear — the mod only extends what your client receives.
  • If you need a permanent record, copy important lines out manually; the mod does not write chat to a file.
