Modify Player Data Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I start modifying a player's data with this mod?
Run the vanilla /data command targeting a player entity, for example /data get entity , and the mod will let it resolve instead of failing. From there you can use get, merge, and modify on player NBT just like you would on any other entity.
Why does /data say the target is not a valid entity when I use a player name?
In vanilla, players are not selectable by /data, so the command errors out. With this mod installed on the server, player names and player selectors like @a or @p become valid targets for /data.
Can I edit another player's inventory with /data?
Yes. Target their player entity and modify the Inventory list tag, adding or replacing entries with the same Slot, id, and Count structure vanilla uses for items. Changes apply to the live player, so they see the result immediately.
How do I change a player's health or hunger with /data?
Use /data merge on the player entity and set tags like Health, AbsorptionAmount, or foodLevel and foodSaturationLevel inside the Food tag. Health is capped by the player's max health attribute, so values above that get clamped.
Do I need to install the mod on the client to use it on a server?
No. The mod only needs to be on the server side, so vanilla clients can connect and the data commands still work. This is the main reason it is useful for servers.
Can I modify my own player data in singleplayer?
Yes, the mod works in singleplayer since the integrated server runs the mod. Target yourself with @s or your username and the /data command will resolve normally.
Why does my /data merge on a player seem to do nothing?
The most common cause is a wrong NBT path or tag name, since /data silently ignores paths that do not exist for merge. Double-check the exact tag names with /data get entity first, then merge against what you see.
What happens if I set an invalid value like a negative Health?
The game clamps or rejects values that violate the player's attributes or data types, so you may see the change ignored or the player taking damage. Always test on a spare player or in a copy of the world before applying to someone important.
Does this mod work with other mods that add player data?
It operates on the player's NBT, so any mod that stores its data as player NBT tags can be edited the same way. Mods that keep data outside NBT, such as in separate capability stores, will not be visible to /data.
Will editing player data with this mod cause lag or corruption?
Normal edits are cheap because they just change NBT, but merging huge lists like a full inventory every tick can add up. Avoid running /data on players in a repeating command block loop, and back up the world before large edits.
