How to Get Silk Touch and Fortune on One Pickaxe
Why you would want both
Silk Touch and Fortune are mutually exclusive in vanilla, forcing you to carry two pickaxes. Merge Enchantments lets a single pickaxe drop blocks intact (Silk Touch) while still boosting drop rates for ores and other Fortune-affected blocks.
Merging them
1. Start with a pickaxe that already has one of the two enchantments, and an enchanted book or donor pickaxe with the other.
2. Place the target pickaxe in the left anvil slot and the book/donor in the right slot.
3. Take the output. Both Silk Touch and Fortune should appear on the tooltip.
4. Add Efficiency and Unbreaking afterward, one book at a time, to avoid hitting the "Too Expensive" cap too early.
How the two behave together
- Silk Touch takes priority for blocks it can affect — you will get the block itself rather than Fortune-boosted drops.
- Fortune still applies to blocks Silk Touch cannot silk-touch, such as certain ores that drop items instead of blocks, and to crops and other Fortune-affected drops.
- Because both are active, you no longer need to swap tools mid-mining.
Tip
If you only want Fortune on ores and Silk Touch on everything else, this is exactly the setup. Test it on a few blocks in a safe area first so you know which behavior wins for each block type.
