MAtmos Ambient Sound Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I get MAtmos to actually start making sounds?
MAtmos runs automatically once installed, but you need to be in a valid environment for it to trigger — stand outside in a biome, near trees, or in a cave and wait a few seconds. If you hear nothing, check that the mod's volume isn't muted in its config and that your master sound isn't turned down.
Why is MAtmos silent in the Nether or End?
MAtmos has dedicated sound sets for some dimensions but coverage varies, and the Nether's ambience is intentionally sparse compared to the Overworld. If you hear nothing at all, make sure the correct sound pack is enabled in the config, since some packs only cover specific biomes or dimensions.
Does MAtmos work with other sound mods like Sound Physics or Dynamic Surroundings?
It can run alongside them, but you'll often get doubled or clashing ambience because both mods try to play environmental sounds. Pick one as your primary ambience mod, or disable overlapping categories in each mod's config to avoid audio stacking.
How do I turn off specific sounds like crows or wolves?
Open the MAtmos config and look for the sound category or event toggles — most individual sounds can be disabled without turning off the whole mod. If a specific sound isn't listed, you can usually edit the sound pack's configuration files to remove or mute it.
Can I add my own sounds or use custom sound packs with MAtmos?
Yes, MAtmos supports custom sound packs, which is how the community expands its ambience beyond the default set. Drop a compatible pack into the mod's sound pack folder and enable it in the config; packs define which sounds play in which environments.
Why do sounds keep playing when I go underground or into a house?
MAtmos detects indoor and cave environments, but detection can lag or misread transitional areas like doorways and overhangs. Give it a moment after moving, and if it's persistent, check that your sound pack includes the correct indoor/cave definitions.
Does MAtmos hurt performance or FPS?
MAtmos is generally lightweight since it only plays audio and does environment checks, but heavy sound packs with many layered events can add CPU and memory load. If you notice stutter, disable less important sound categories or switch to a lighter pack.
How do I make MAtmos quieter without turning it off completely?
Use the mod's own volume slider in its config rather than your master volume, so you keep other game audio intact. You can also lower the volume of specific categories like weather or wildlife if only some sounds bother you.
Why does MAtmos play the wrong sounds for my biome?
This usually happens with modded biomes that the sound pack doesn't recognize, so MAtmos falls back to a default or generic set. Check whether your pack has biome mappings for modded biomes, or use a pack that supports them.
Do I need to configure MAtmos after installing, or does it just work?
It works out of the box with sensible defaults, so you can just play. Configuration is only needed if you want to change volume, enable extra sound packs, or disable specific sounds you find distracting.
