Convert a Flat Map to 3D Terrain Display
Prepare Your Map and Frame
Start with a filled map (one that has already been used to explore and chart your world). Place this map inside an item frame mounted on any block or wall where you want the 3D display to appear.
Activate 3D Mode
Sneak (hold Shift) and right-click on the item frame to open the map settings menu. You'll see options to toggle between 2D and 3D rendering modes. Select 3D mode to activate volumetric terrain rendering.
Adjust Display Settings
While the menu is open, you can fine-tune how your map appears:
- Change the starting Y-level to control which vertical slice of terrain displays (useful for showing different elevation ranges)
- Review quality and performance presets if your framerate drops
- Apply your changes by closing the menu
View Your Result
Step back from the frame to see your flat map transform into raised 3D terrain. Mountains, forests, and water features now have visible depth and volume. You can switch back to 2D mode anytime using the same sneak + right-click method.
