Maps3D Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I turn a regular map into a 3D display?
Place a filled map into an item frame, then sneak and right-click the frame to open the settings menu. Toggle the 3D mode on, and the terrain will immediately rise out from the frame showing height and depth.
Can I have some maps in 3D and others in 2D at the same time?
Yes, each item frame stores its own settings independently. You can set one frame to 3D mode and leave another in 2D mode, or mix and match however you want in the same room.
What does the Y-level setting do?
The Y-level setting controls where the 3D terrain model starts vertically. Adjusting it lets you focus on different heights of your world—useful for highlighting mountains, caves, or specific terrain layers.
My frames are lagging when I have multiple 3D maps. How do I fix this?
Open the settings menu and select a lower quality or performance preset. You can also disable 3D rendering globally if needed, or reduce the number of active 3D maps in one area.
Do 3D maps work with shader mods?
Yes, Maps3D works with most Iris shaders, so your 3D terrain models will receive proper lighting and shadows just like the rest of your world.
Will this mod break my world if I remove it?
No, the mod is safe to install or remove at any time. Your maps will revert to flat 2D displays, but your world save remains intact and playable.
Do I need to craft new items or blocks to use this mod?
No, Maps3D works entirely with vanilla maps and item frames—no new items or blocks are added, so your world stays compatible with other mods and servers.
Can I change a 3D map back to 2D without removing it from the frame?
Yes, sneak and right-click the frame again to open settings and toggle 3D mode off. The map stays in the frame but displays flat.
What happens if I update the mod to a newer version?
Your custom display settings are saved on each item frame, so they'll carry over when you update. Just load your world and your 3D maps will work as before.
Can I use this mod on a multiplayer server?
Maps3D should work on servers, but check with your server admin first—some servers restrict client-side rendering mods. The mod itself doesn't require special server setup.
