Luck Perms Plugin FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I start using LuckPerms after installing it?
Run the `/luckperms` command in your server console to confirm the plugin loaded, then access the web editor by running `/lp editor` to open the visual interface in your browser. If you prefer commands, you can start creating ranks immediately with `/lp creategroup [groupname]`.
What's the difference between groups and players in LuckPerms?
Groups are ranks that multiple players can share (like "moderator" or "vip"), while players are individual accounts that can have their own unique permissions or inherit permissions from groups. Most of the time you'll assign players to groups rather than giving each player individual permissions.
How do I give a player a rank?
Use the command `/lp user [playername] parent add [groupname]` to add them to a group, or use the web editor to select the player and add them to a rank visually. You can remove them from a rank with `/lp user [playername] parent remove [groupname]`.
Can I make one rank inherit permissions from another rank?
Yes, use `/lp group [groupname] parent add [parentgroupname]` to make a rank inherit from another, or set this up in the web editor by editing the group's parents. This lets you create hierarchies like "moderator" inheriting from "member."
How do I give a specific permission to a player or group?
Use `/lp user [playername] permission set [permission.node] true` for individual players or `/lp group [groupname] permission set [permission.node] true` for entire ranks. The web editor also lets you toggle permissions visually without typing commands.
What happens if I set a permission to false instead of true?
Setting a permission to false explicitly denies it, which overrides any inherited permissions from parent ranks—useful for removing specific abilities from a player who's in a high-ranking group. If you just want to remove a permission entirely, use the remove command instead.
Do I need to restart my server after changing permissions?
No, LuckPerms applies permission changes instantly without requiring a restart. Players may need to rejoin the server to see changes take effect in some cases, but the plugin itself updates permissions in real-time.
Can I edit permissions directly in config files instead of using commands?
Yes, you can manually edit the config files in your server folder if you prefer, but the web editor and in-game commands are faster and less error-prone for most tasks. If you do edit files manually, make sure to reload LuckPerms with `/lp reload` afterward.
Will LuckPerms slow down my server with lots of players?
No, LuckPerms is designed to run efficiently even on servers with many players online. The plugin uses caching to avoid repeated permission checks, so performance impact is minimal.
What storage options does LuckPerms support?
LuckPerms can save data to multiple backends including local files, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB, so you can choose whatever fits your server setup best. You configure this in the plugin's config file before first startup.
