Troubleshooting: Why Your Items Are Not Getting Names

Check the order of functions

This is the most common cause. The naming function reads enchantments from the item at the moment it executes. If it runs before the enchantment function in the same loot table entry, it sees a plain item and produces nothing useful. Move the naming function so it comes after enchantment application.

Check the item actually has enchantments

An unenchanted item has nothing for the generator to work with. Verify by rolling the table with /loot and inspecting the result. If the item arrives unenchanted, fix the enchantment step first.

Check your datapack loaded

Custom name pools only apply if the datapack loaded cleanly.

1. Run /reload and watch chat for errors.

2. Open the game log and search for datapack parse failures.

3. Validate every JSON file you added — a single trailing comma invalidates the file and its names silently disappear.

Check the namespace and path

If you copied a function ID from a tutorial, confirm the namespace matches what this mod actually registers. A wrong namespace means the function is ignored with no obvious error.

Still stuck

Strip your loot table back to the minimum: one enchanted item entry plus the naming function. Once that works, add your other functions back one at a time to find the conflict.
