How to Find a Specific Message in a Long Server Chat Log
Scroll-and-scan strategy
With tens of thousands of lines stored, brute-force scrolling is impractical. Instead, narrow the window first:
1. Open chat with T.
2. Scroll up until you reach roughly the time period you remember (use timestamps from your server's chat format as anchors).
3. Hold Shift and scroll to jump faster, then release Shift to fine-scroll once you are close.
Using external tools for real searching
This mod stores history in memory, not in a searchable file, so there is no built-in search box. The practical workaround is to run a chat-logging mod or your server's own log alongside it. Many servers keep a logs/latest.log on the server side, and client-side logging mods write chat to a text file you can open in any editor and use Ctrl+F on.
Tips that save time
- Note the in-game time or a distinctive player name the moment something important is said, so you have an anchor later.
- If your server uses a chat format with timestamps, those are the fastest way to bisect the log.
- Remember the buffer only survives until you close Minecraft; anything you need permanently should be copied out or logged externally.
