Legendary Tooltips Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I open the Legendary Tooltips config?
Legendary Tooltips is configured through the in-game mod config screen, reachable from the mods list on the main menu or via your mod loader's config menu. If you use a config library like Cloth Config or Configured, you can also open it from there.
Why do all my tooltips look the same even though the mod is installed?
The default setup only applies a single generic border, so rarity- or mod-specific borders won't appear until you define them. You need to set up border rules (or install a resource pack that provides them) for tooltips to look different per item.
How do I make tooltips show a different border for rare or enchanted items?
In the config you create border rules that match items by criteria such as rarity, mod ID, or specific items, then assign a border to each rule. Rules are evaluated in order, so put your more specific rules above the general ones.
How do I turn on the 3D item preview inside the tooltip?
Enable the 3D preview option in the config; once on, hovering an item renders a rotating 3D model in the tooltip instead of the flat icon. You can usually also adjust the preview's size and rotation speed there.
Can I stop the tooltip from showing the 3D preview for every single item?
Yes, the preview settings let you limit it, for example only showing 3D previews for certain items or disabling it for items where it isn't useful. Check the preview-related options in the config rather than turning the whole feature off.
How do I center the item name and add space below it in the tooltip?
There are dedicated options for name alignment and for padding/spacing under the name. Turn on centered names and increase the spacing value until the layout looks right.
How do I add my own custom tooltip border with a resource pack?
You create a resource pack containing the border texture and a definition file that tells the mod how to draw it, then place the pack in your resourcepacks folder and enable it. The mod supports a limited number of custom borders per pack, so keep that cap in mind when designing.
My custom border texture looks stretched or misaligned. What did I do wrong?
This usually means the texture's dimensions or the border's slice/inset values don't match the intended layout, so the nine-slice scaling distorts it. Double-check the border definition's sizing values against your actual texture size.
Does Legendary Tooltips work with other tooltip mods like JEI or tooltip overhaul mods?
It generally coexists with JEI, but other mods that also rewrite tooltip rendering can conflict, causing doubled borders or missing elements. If you see that, disable the overlapping tooltip feature in one of the mods or check the config for compatibility options.
Does the 3D item preview hurt performance?
Rendering a 3D model per hovered item adds some cost, but it's only while a tooltip is open, so the impact is normally small. If you notice stutter in inventories with many items, lower the preview quality or disable previews for non-essential items.
