How to Change the Port Number of Your LAN World

Why Change the Port

By default a LAN world uses a standard port, and that port may already be taken by another program or blocked by your router. Changing it lets you avoid conflicts and pick a port you know is open.

1. Open your world and go to the Open to LAN screen.

2. Look for the port field the mod adds to that screen. It appears alongside the normal game mode and cheats options.

3. Type the port number you want to use. Pick something in the higher range to reduce the chance of a clash with common services.

4. Confirm to open the world. The mod now hosts the LAN session on the port you chose.

5. Tell your friends the new port. They enter the address as host:port in Direct Connect.

If the Port Does Not Work

  • A port can only be used by one program at a time. If the world fails to open, another app may be holding that port, so try a different number.
  • Some routers block incoming connections on unusual ports. If local players connect but remote players cannot, the port itself may be the problem.
  • Remember the port only applies to the current session; you set it again each time you open the world unless you keep using the same value.
