Survive Your First Night Without Going Insane

Prepare Before Dark

Gather wood and craft torches immediately after spawning. The shader's fear effects intensify the longer you remain in darkness, so light is your primary defense. Build a small shelter with a door and place torches around the interior before sunset.

Managing Fear Effects

Staying in unlit areas triggers screen warping and hallucinations—glowing eyes appear on cave walls and shadowy figures manifest in forests. These effects worsen over time in darkness. The best strategy is constant illumination: place torches every few blocks along your path and keep your shelter well-lit.

If you venture into caves, bring stacks of torches. The pitch-black cave system combined with the shader's fog makes navigation difficult, but torches cut through both the darkness and the psychological effects.

Health Awareness

When your health drops below six hearts, your screen pulses red—a visual warning that danger is close. Retreat to your lit shelter and eat food to recover. The combination of low health and darkness amplifies the horror atmosphere, making it harder to think clearly. Stay fed and rested.
