Item Overlay Border Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
Why don't I see borders around any of my items?
Item Overlay Border Mod only shows borders on items with rarity higher than Common. Check that your items are actually Uncommon, Rare, Epic, or higher by hovering over them to read their rarity in the tooltip. Common items intentionally have no border to keep your inventory clean.
How do I turn off the animated border effect?
Open your config file at config/itemoverlayborder.toml and set "Disable animation" = true. This keeps the colored rarity borders visible but stops them from moving, giving you a static outline instead.
Do the borders show up in recipe viewers like JEI?
Yes, the mod works directly with JEI, REI, and EMI, so you'll see rarity-colored borders around items in those recipe viewers too. This helps you spot rare ingredients and results at a glance while browsing recipes.
Can I use my own custom rarity colors instead of the default ones?
Yes, if you have a script add-on like RarityJS installed, the mod will pull custom rarity colors from those scripts automatically. No extra setup needed—the mod reads the rarity colors directly from your add-ons.
Will this mod work with shop menus or other GUIs?
The mod supports standard player inventories, container chests, and shop menus like CashShop. It may not work with every custom GUI, but it covers the most common screens you'll encounter.
Do I need to manually add items or configure a list?
No, the mod requires zero manual setup. It automatically detects item rarities and applies the correct border colors without you needing to edit any item lists.
Why are the borders different colors for different items?
Each border color matches the item's built-in rarity tier—Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and so on each have their own color. This color-coding lets you instantly tell how valuable an item is without reading tooltips.
Does this mod affect my game performance or FPS?
The mod is lightweight and designed to have minimal performance impact. If you notice lag, try disabling the animation in the config file to reduce visual processing.
Can I see borders on items in my hotbar while playing?
Yes, rarity borders display on your hotbar slots during regular gameplay, so you can quickly identify your best tools and weapons without opening your inventory.
What if an item doesn't show a border even though it seems rare?
The item might actually be Common rarity, or the mod may not recognize it if it's from a mod that doesn't properly set rarity values. Check the tooltip to confirm the rarity, and if it's definitely not Common, the item's mod may need to be updated to support standard rarity tags.
