Creating a mixed-livery locomotive depot display
Planning your depot layout
Arrange parallel tracks in a flat area with enough space between each track to view locomotives from the side. Standard gauge track spacing should allow you to see each locomotive's livery details clearly without overlap.
Placing locomotives for display
Position one locomotive per track, leaving them stationary. The P42 offers five distinct historic liveries (Phase II, Phase III, Pepsi Can, Phase IV, and Phase Vb), while the F59PHI provides five regional schemes (Surfliner, Cascades, Amtrak California, Metrolink, and Coaster). Arrange them in chronological or regional order for visual coherence.
Adding context with passenger cars
Attach one or two Superliner or Bombardier Bilevel cars behind select locomotives to show how complete consists look. This helps visitors understand the difference between intercity and commuter configurations.
Lighting and viewing areas
Add adequate lighting around your depot so all livery details are visible. Create a viewing platform or walkway perpendicular to the tracks so visitors can walk along and appreciate each locomotive's paint scheme without obstruction.
