How to Choose Between Dither and No Dither for Your Map Image
What dithering does
Maps can only show a limited palette of colors. Dithering mixes pixels of available colors in a pattern to simulate shades that are not directly available, which makes gradients and photos look smoother. Turning dither off (none) uses flat, solid colors with no mixing.
Picking the right mode
Use dither when your image has:
- Photographs or realistic art
- Smooth gradients, skies, or shadows
- Lots of subtle color transitions
Use none when your image has:
- Logos, icons, or pixel art
- Bold flat colors and hard edges
- Text or simple shapes where mixing would look noisy
Trying both
You do not have to guess. Run /image2map preview <URL> to open a live preview, then switch modes with:
/dither <dither/none>
Watch how the preview changes and pick whichever looks cleaner for your specific picture. When you are happy, save it to a map. The same dither choice applies whether you use the short create command or the full one with width and height, so decide the mode before generating a large multi-map set to avoid redoing the whole wall.
