How to Stop Minecraft From Eating Your PC's Resources While Alt-Tabbed

Why the game keeps working in the background

Minecraft does not pause when you click away from the window. It keeps rendering frames, loading chunks, and playing audio even though you cannot see or hear any of it. Idle Tweaks Mod watches for that exact situation and throttles the game down automatically.

What happens when you tab out

Once the game window loses focus, the mod takes over:

  • FPS is capped to a low background limit instead of running at your normal framerate.
  • Render distance is reduced so far-away chunks stop being drawn and updated.
  • All game audio is muted so mob noises, music, and ambient sounds do not leak through.

You do not need to configure anything for this to work. The moment you alt-tab to a browser or another program, the throttling kicks in; the moment you click back into Minecraft, everything returns to normal.

Getting the most out of it

If you still hear the game after tabbing out, check that you actually left the window focused elsewhere — some window managers keep focus on the game. If your system still feels loaded, close other background apps, since the mod only limits Minecraft itself. This is especially useful when you leave the game open while reading a wiki, watching a video, or doing work, and you want your CPU and GPU free for those tasks.
