Idle Tweaks Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I open the Idle Tweaks config?
Open the mod list from the main menu or pause screen, select Idle Tweaks, then click the Config button. From there you can toggle each background behavior on or off.
Does Idle Tweaks work automatically or do I have to enable it?
It works out of the box once installed — no setup is required. The background FPS cap, render distance reduction, and sound muting all kick in automatically when the game window loses focus.
How does Idle Tweaks know when Minecraft is in the background?
It detects when the game window is no longer the active/focused window on your system. As soon as you alt-tab away or click another window, the tweaks activate, and they revert when you click back into Minecraft.
Why is my FPS still high when I alt-tab out of Minecraft?
Make sure the FPS limiting option is enabled in the config, and check that your operating system isn't forcing the game to stay focused. Some overlay tools and multi-monitor setups can interfere with focus detection.
Can I change how much the render distance drops in the background?
Yes — the config lets you adjust the background render distance to your liking. If you set it too low you may see chunks pop back in when you return, so pick a value that balances savings and visual continuity.
Does Idle Tweaks mute all sounds or just the game audio?
It mutes Minecraft's own sounds while the window is unfocused. Audio from other applications is untouched, so music or voice chat keeps playing normally.
Will Idle Tweaks break my other performance mods?
It generally coexists fine with performance mods like Sodium, Lithium, or OptiFine alternatives, since it only changes behavior when the window is unfocused. If you notice conflicts, check whether another mod also manages background FPS or focus behavior.
Does it work on a server, or only singleplayer?
It's a client-side mod, so it works whether you're in singleplayer or connected to a server. It only affects your own game's rendering and audio, not the server.
Why does Minecraft still use a lot of CPU/GPU when I'm tabbed out?
Idle Tweaks reduces rendering load but can't stop the game from ticking or loading chunks entirely. If usage is still high, lower the background FPS cap further and reduce the background render distance in the config.
How do I tell if Idle Tweaks is actually doing anything?
Alt-tab out and watch your FPS counter or system resource monitor — you should see usage drop noticeably. You can also toggle individual features in the config and compare behavior with them on versus off.
