How to Freeze a Crop at a Specific Growth Stage

Place the Ice First

Crops only stop growing while an ice block sits directly beneath the farmland or soil block they are planted on. Dig out the block under the farmland, place ice in the hole, then put the farmland back on top. If you place the ice after the crop is already mature, nothing changes — the crop is done growing anyway.

Time It Right

Because the freeze only prevents the *next* growth stage, you need to catch the crop at the stage you want before adding the ice. Watch the crop as it grows and place the ice the moment it reaches your target look. If you overshoot, break the crop and replant, then try again.

Bone Meal to Fine-Tune

Bone meal still works on frozen crops, so you are not locked in. If you froze a wheat crop one stage too early, use bone meal to push it forward until it looks right. This is the main trick for decorative builds: freeze first, then bone meal up to the exact visual you want.

Check the Block Below

If a crop keeps growing despite your ice, the ice is probably not under the correct block. Make sure it is directly beneath the farmland, not diagonally or under a neighboring tile.
