Horizon Reach Render Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
Do I need to install this on the server, the client, or both?
You need to install Horizon Reach Render Mod on both your server and your client. You'll also need to install Voxy on your client to actually render the distant terrain geometry that the server sends.
Why can't I see distant terrain even though the mod is installed?
Make sure Voxy is installed on your client—Horizon Reach sends the data, but Voxy renders it. Also check that your synchronization distance is set high enough using `/vss distance get`, and verify the server has generated or cached terrain data in those chunks.
How far away can players see terrain?
The server admin controls this with `/vss distance set `, which sets how many chunks outward from each player the server will send terrain data. The actual visual distance depends on your client's render distance and Voxy's rendering settings.
Does distant terrain update when someone builds far away?
Yes—whenever a player places or breaks blocks, the mod updates the distant terrain data on the server and sends those changes to connected players, so everyone sees the build in real time across the horizon.
What's the difference between this mod and just increasing render distance?
Increasing render distance forces every player to load chunks locally, which lags single-player clients. Horizon Reach stores terrain on the server and sends pre-rendered LOD data, so players see distant landscapes instantly without loading full chunks or waiting to explore.
Is this mod heavy on server bandwidth?
The mod uses compressed network transfers to minimize bandwidth use. You can further control this with `/vss bandwidth set_kbps ` to cap the outgoing network speed, and the server caches terrain locally so it doesn't regenerate data repeatedly.
Can I see other players standing far away?
Yes, but it's experimental—use `/vss farplayers enable` on the server to turn on distant player rendering, and players will see each other standing on the horizon when they're far apart.
How do I integrate this with Xaero's World Map?
Install Xaero's World Map on your client, then use `/vssclient xaero enable` to let Horizon Reach write terrain data directly into your map. Use `/vssclient xaero reload` if you need to clear old map data and fetch fresh terrain from the server.
Does the server need to generate all terrain data before players can see it?
Not necessarily—you can enable background generation with `/vss generation enable` so the server fills in missing terrain data over time, but players will still receive whatever LOD data exists immediately upon joining.
Does this mod work in singleplayer or LAN worlds?
Yes, Horizon Reach works in singleplayer worlds and local LAN sessions just like on dedicated servers, so you can see distant terrain and use all the same commands in any world type.
