Hologram API Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I add Hologram API to my mod project?
Add the library file to your project's dependencies using modApi files(" ") in your build configuration. Once added, you can import and use the hologram creation methods in your code.
Can holograms be seen by all players or just the one who spawned them?
Holograms are client-sided, meaning they render only on the client that spawned them. If you want all players to see the same hologram, you'll need to spawn it on each player's client separately.
What's the difference between lifetime and render distance?
Lifetime controls how many ticks the hologram stays visible before disappearing automatically. Render distance controls how far away a player can be before the hologram stops rendering, even if it hasn't reached the end of its lifetime.
How do I make text rise upward like a damage number?
Attach an update loop to your hologram that modifies its Y position on every tick, and optionally reduce the alpha value over time. The tick-based animation system lets you change position, scale, or color each frame to create rising or fading effects.
Can I use custom fonts or only Minecraft's default font?
Hologram API renders text components, so you're limited to Minecraft's text rendering system. You can style text with colors, bold, italic, and shadows, but custom fonts require additional mods or resource packs.
Why are my holograms not showing up?
Check that you've set a reasonable render distance and that the hologram lifetime isn't set to zero. Also verify the coordinates are correct and the hologram is being spawned on the client side, not the server.
Does text shadow affect performance?
Text shadows have minimal performance impact since rendering happens client-side, but disabling them can provide a tiny boost if you're spawning many holograms at once.
Can holograms follow moving entities?
Yes—update the hologram's position every tick using the entity's current coordinates. This is how health bars and damage numbers stay attached to mobs as they move.
What happens if I set scale to 0 or negative values?
Scale values should remain positive; setting them to zero or negative may cause rendering errors or invisible text. Stick to positive decimal values to control text size safely.
Can I change a hologram's text after it's spawned?
Hologram API doesn't support editing text after creation—you'll need to despawn the old hologram and spawn a new one with updated text instead.
