Using Guards Alongside Iron and Snow Golems for Base Defense

Know each defender's role

Guard Villagers gives you three defender types via spawn eggs: Guards (sword-and-shield villagers), Iron Golems (high-health melee tanks), and Snow Golems (ranged snowball throwers). Each has a distinct job, and mixing them covers weaknesses.

Build a layered defense

1. Outer ring — Snow Golems. Place them on walls or towers so they pelt approaching mobs from range. They're fragile, so keep them elevated and behind cover.

2. Mid ring — Guards. Station Guards at gates and along paths. They intercept mobs that get past the snowballs and hold the line with shields.

3. Inner ring — Iron Golems. Put golems at the village center or in front of your most valuable builds. They absorb hits and knock back crowds.

Placement tips

  • Light the entire perimeter so mobs spawn outside your walls, not inside.
  • Leave 2-block-wide corridors so Guards and golems can path without jamming.
  • Use fences and gates to funnel attackers into kill zones where all three defender types overlap.
  • Keep a bell nearby; ringing it during raids organizes villagers and lets defenders work uninterrupted.

Common mistakes

Don't cluster all defenders in one spot — spread them so a single creeper blast can't wipe your defense. Don't rely on Snow Golems in deserts or the Nether; they take damage in hot biomes. And don't forget Guards need an actual village to patrol, so pair this setup with beds and villagers.
