Grit And Gristle FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I start using this mod?
Craft or find a Workstone and place it in your base, then gather raw materials like ores or ingots. Place your materials on top of the Workstone and hit them with a crafted hammer to begin processing.
What's the difference between a Workstone and a Mortar?
The Workstone is for hammering ingots into plates and crushing raw ores with direct hammer strikes. The Mortar is for grinding herbs and plants into powders using a pestle, or stirring multi-ingredient mixtures with a ladle.
Do I need to heat the Mortar for every recipe?
No, only recipes that specifically require heat need the Mortar placed on top of a campfire, blaze burner, or other heat source. Check your recipe in JEI or EMI to see if heat is needed.
Which hammer should I craft first?
Start with a flint hammer as it's the easiest to craft early game, then upgrade to iron, gold, diamond, or netherite hammers as you progress for better durability and faster processing.
Can I use this mod with tech mods and machines?
Yes, Grit and Gristle works well as either an early-game manual crafting step or as a companion to larger machine setups. The Millstone is particularly useful for early processing when played alongside tech mods.
What happens if my hammer breaks while I'm crafting?
Your hammer will break after its durability runs out, and you'll need to craft a new one. Different hammer materials have different durability levels, so choose based on how much use you need.
How do I know what recipes are available?
Use JEI or EMI to view every grinding, crushing, and mixing combination available in the mod. The mod also includes Ponder integration with animated 3D guides for each workstation.
Does this mod add new materials I can grind or crush?
The mod includes extra hammer tool materials and compatible recipes when playing with Caverns and Chasms or Oreganized, expanding what you can process.
Can I automate these workstations?
The manual workstations like the Workstone and Mortar are designed for hands-on crafting, but the Millstone can serve as a semi-automated early-game processing option when used with tech setups.
Why isn't my Mortar recipe working?
Make sure you're using the correct tool (pestle for grinding, ladle for stirring), placing ingredients directly on the Mortar block, and providing heat if the recipe requires it. Check JEI to confirm the exact recipe steps.
