Understanding Portal Destruction Mechanics

When Portals Shatter

The Ghastly Wail Mod specifically triggers portal destruction when a ghast dies while interacting with an activated Nether portal. The ghast must be in contact with the portal structure at the moment of death for the mechanic to activate.

Simply killing a ghast anywhere else in the Nether will not cause this effect. The portal must be actively lit and functional.

What Happens to the Obsidian

When the portal shatters, every obsidian block that formed the frame converts into crying obsidian. These blocks drop as collectible items and can be picked up normally.

The portal structure is completely destroyed—no obsidian remains in place. You'll need to gather new obsidian and rebuild the portal if you want to repeat the process.

Strategic Considerations

Because portal reconstruction is required between each ghast kill, consider building multiple portals in different locations, or establishing a system to quickly rebuild. This makes the mechanic more practical for sustained crying obsidian farming.
