Ghastly Wail Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I get a ghast to die in a Nether portal?
You need to damage a ghast until it has low health, then position it so it dies while inside an activated Nether portal frame. The easiest methods are using a bow, magic damage, or luring it into portal fire. Timing is key—the ghast must be within the portal blocks when it takes the killing blow.
Do I need to activate the portal for the mechanic to work?
Yes, the portal must be fully activated (lit with fire) for the ghast death mechanic to trigger. An unlit portal frame will not shatter or produce crying obsidian when a ghast dies inside it.
What happens to the obsidian blocks when a ghast dies in the portal?
The entire portal structure shatters and breaks apart, and all the obsidian blocks are converted into crying obsidian and dropped as items. You can then collect these crying obsidian blocks from the ground.
Can I farm crying obsidian this way or is it a one-time thing?
You can farm it repeatedly by rebuilding the portal and luring new ghasts to die in it. This makes it a viable alternative to bartering with piglins or searching loot chests, though it requires effort to set up and maintain.
Does the mod work with other portal types or only Nether portals?
The mod only affects Nether portals. End portals and other custom portals from other mods are not affected by this mechanic.
What's the best way to trap a ghast in a portal?
Build your portal in an open area of the Nether where ghasts spawn, then use projectiles or lava to damage it while it's hovering near or inside the portal frame. Some players build containment structures around the portal to prevent the ghast from escaping.
Will the portal respawn after it shatters?
No, the portal is destroyed when the ghast dies in it. You'll need to rebuild it with obsidian blocks if you want to repeat the process, though you'll have crying obsidian from the previous kill to use for other purposes.
Is this mod compatible with other mods that change Nether portal mechanics?
Compatibility depends on how those mods modify portals. Mods that significantly alter portal behavior or rendering may conflict, so test your modpack to ensure they work together. Most standard mods should coexist without issues.
Can I use crying obsidian from this mod the same way as normal crying obsidian?
Yes, crying obsidian obtained from this mod functions identically to crying obsidian from other sources and can be used for respawn anchors, decoration, or any other purpose.
Does this mod affect performance or cause lag?
The mod is lightweight and only triggers when a ghast dies in an active portal, so it shouldn't cause noticeable performance issues. Portal destruction is handled efficiently by the game engine.
