How to Set the Default Gamemode for New Players

Using /defaultgamemode

GamemodeOverhaul restores support for the /defaultgamemode command, which controls what mode players spawn into when they first join the world. Type /defaultgamemode followed by a mode value.

The command accepts the same shorthand as /gamemode, so you can use words, letters, or numbers depending on what the server config allows:

  • /defaultgamemode survival
  • /defaultgamemode c
  • /defaultgamemode 2

After running it, you should see a confirmation message in chat.

What It Actually Affects

/defaultgamemode does not change the mode of players who are already online. It only applies to players who join afterward, or to players who have not yet had a mode assigned. If you want to change an existing player right now, use /gamemode or /gm on them directly.

Permissions and Caveats

This command typically requires operator-level permissions. On a multiplayer server, only staff can run it. If the command returns an "unknown command" error, the server owner may have disabled it in the mod's config file — the mod lets you toggle each command individually, so /defaultgamemode can be turned off while /gamemode stays on.

Practical Use

Set it to adventure or survival for a survival server, creative for a build server, or spectator if you want new joiners to observe before choosing a team.
