How to Change Your Gamemode Using Numbers and Letters

Using the /gamemode Command

With GamemodeOverhaul installed on the server, /gamemode accepts the old shorthand values again. Type /gamemode followed by a space, then the value you want.

  • /gamemode 0 or /gamemode s — survival
  • /gamemode 1 or /gamemode c — creative
  • /gamemode 2 or /gamemode a — adventure
  • /gamemode 3 or /gamemode sp — spectator

Press Enter and your gamemode changes immediately. You can also target another player by adding their name after the value, for example /gamemode 1 Steve. This requires the appropriate permission level, so it may not work for everyone on a server.

Why Letters and Numbers Work Again

Vanilla removed these shortcuts in 1.13, leaving only the full word names. This mod restores the numeric and letter forms, so muscle memory from older versions still works. If a value does nothing, the server owner may have disabled that particular argument in the config — ask them to check.

Quick Tips

  • The letter forms are the first letter of the mode name, except spectator, which uses sp to avoid clashing with survival.
  • Values are not case-sensitive in most setups, but typing lowercase is safest.
  • If you get a syntax error, make sure you are not adding extra spaces.
