FTB Obsidian Mod FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I get started with FTB Obsidian after installing it?
Create or edit the ftbobsidian-startup.snbt config file in your instance's config folder, since that is where all forced resource pack behavior is defined. Datapacks dropped into the root game folder load automatically without any config, so you can start there if you only need datapack auto-loading.
Where does FTB Obsidian look for resource packs and datapacks?
It reads resource packs and datapacks from the root game folders of your instance, not just the standard resourcepacks and datapacks subfolders. This means you can drop packs directly next to the game files and have FTB Obsidian pick them up.
How do I force a resource pack to load without the player enabling it?
Add the pack's ID to the forced resource pack list in ftbobsidian-startup.snbt. FTB Obsidian will then load it at startup regardless of what the player has selected in the resource pack menu.
What is the difference between file-based and folder-based resource pack IDs?
A file-based ID points to a specific pack file, while a folder-based ID points to a directory containing the pack. FTB Obsidian accepts either form in the startup config, so use whichever matches how the pack is stored in your instance.
How do I make an incompatible resource pack load anyway?
Use the compatibility override in ftbobsidian-startup.snbt to mark the pack as compatible. Minecraft will then treat the pack as if it declared the current pack format, letting it load even though it normally would be rejected.
Why is my forced resource pack not loading?
The most common cause is a mismatched pack ID in ftbobsidian-startup.snbt — the ID must match exactly how the pack is named or located. Also confirm the pack is actually in the root game folder or resourcepacks folder that FTB Obsidian scans.
How do datapacks get auto-loaded without me configuring anything?
Place the datapack in the specific root game folder that FTB Obsidian watches. On startup the mod loads everything it finds there, so no entry in the config is needed for datapacks.
Do I need to edit the config for datapacks, or only for resource packs?
Only resource packs require entries in ftbobsidian-startup.snbt. Datapacks placed in the correct root folder load automatically, which is the main difference in how the two pack types are handled.
Will forcing resource packs with FTB Obsidian affect performance?
Forcing a pack mainly changes which packs load at startup, not how they render, so the performance impact is generally the same as loading that pack normally. Very large or high-resolution packs will still cost the same memory and VRAM they always would.
Does FTB Obsidian work on both client and server, or only one side?
Resource pack forcing is a client-side concern, while datapack auto-loading matters for both client and server depending on where you want the datapack active. Install it on the side where you need the packs loaded and keep the config consistent across a modpack.
